SIM-UOL best lecturer recommendations

 Year 1 Modules:

Principles of accounting (recommended best lecturer: Balwant Singh)

Mr Balwant conducts his lessons with clear explanations and lecture notes. He is a very patient lecturer who will not hesitate to help students whenever they have queries. Lessons conducted by Mr Balwant are interesting, he speaks with expression. Mr Balwant puts in effort to read up on textbooks and using the inputs to prepare his notes.

Introduction to Economics (recommended best lecturer: Chen Aidi)

Ms Chen Aidi has very good lecture notes (easy to understand). She explains concepts in detail during lectures with diagrams.

Just to add on, there is another lecturer named Dr Zhang. Dr Zhang prepares his lecture notes in word format, they are really precise explanations of the concepts along with diagrams of the supply and demand etc.

Principles of Banking and Finance (recommended best lecturer: Koh Siew Min)

Ms Koh also practices an interactive classroom environment, where she asks questions and students will answer. Whenever she notices a student not paying attention in the class, she will ask questions to ensure that the student does not day dream etc. For the PBF lecture notes, almost all lecturers use roughly similar notes. Ms Koh is thorough and patient when it comes to explaining the concepts. She also attends the foreign revision lectures to catch up on which topics will come out for the exam.

Maths 1 (recommended best lecturer: Dr Phil Stephenson / Ms Joli Tan)

Ms Joli teaches short cuts to certain problems, that will save you alot of time during your examination (I feel this is really important as during your math 1 exam, time constraint is a very big concern.) Ms Joli is a very patient teacher, she never gets angry or fustrated when it comes to answering the students doubts.

Stats 1 (Recommended best lecturer: Raymond Teo)

Year 2 and 3 Modules:

If you are pondering on which level 100 elective to take, I would recommend taking Introduction to computer systems architecture and programming, as it is a really easy module get an A, in my opinion. There is only one lecturer, that is Koh Chung Haur.

Financial reporting (recommended best lecturer: Joanna Chia)

I would recommend Ms Joanna Chia solely on the basis of the quality of her notes and the number of questions she goes through in class. Her notes are mainly for the theory parts of the exam. They are very detailed and very good for revision. The questions she goes through covers almost all kinds of exam questions that may appear during your exam.

Mr Jabbar is another lecturer of financial reporting, he is more detailed in terms of explanations when coming to questions and the theory concepts. He will personally work you through the questions by writing out the financial statements line by line with you.

Of course, from my point of view, the financial reporting module covers a very wide range of concepts and rules. I would prefer to pick the lecturer that goes through fast and can cover as many concepts and questions as possible.

Microeconomics (recommended best lecturer: Dr Sovan)

I ever been to Dr Sovan's class before, and I would say that Dr Sovan is a lecturer who knows his stuff inside out. Dr Sovan is the kind of lecturer whom you can throw any kind of economics question at, and you can be sure that he can answer that question of yours in just a few minutes. He is a really patient teacher, so if you don't understand at any point of time during his explanation, you can just stop him and ask.

Audit and Assurance (recommended best lecturer: Mr Nic Woo)

Just a side note before we start, I would recommend audit and assurance to be taken up as your elective module even if you are not an Accounting and Finance student. In my opinion, other than Math 1, I find that audit and assurance is the next easiest module to get an A for. Of course, the questions in the past year exam papers may seem difficult and may throw you off board. But, I am sure if you have done your homework and made sure you understood what Mr Nic Woo went through during lectures, getting an A isn't a problem.

Mr Nic Woo is a teacher who does his due dilligence, be it when preparing his lecture notes or during her classroom lessons. His notes are very detailed and very comprehensive. He goes through the lectures with case studies. Mr Nic Woo goes through tutorials during his classes, and in my opinion, those questions actually covers a lot of concepts in audit that you can use when you attempt the case study questions.

Management Science Methods (recommended best lecturer: David Quek)

Mr David Quek is a very hardworking teacher, he prepares a mi ji (aka secret manual for msm) for your practice for the exam. He does all the past year papers every year, and he will upload a scanned copy of his answers for your reference and usage for exam revision. Mr David Quek has a very detailed set of lecture notes, it includes examples of past year questions as well as the easy questions that he thought of.

Financial Management (recommended best lecturer: Chong chin siong)

Mr Chong is by far the best lecturer for FM. Mr Chong practises an interactive style of teaching, where questions are asked and students will answer. He has diagrams to illustrate the most important concepts during lectures, especially for the risk management topic (the most difficult topic in FM). His diagrams do help in answer the exam questions.

Management accounting (recommended best lecturer: Balwant / Mok Tien Soon)

Management accounting is a very difficult paper for the UOL students. Balwant focuses more on the theory aspect of management accounting, he reads the textbook and prepares his notes. But for the calculation questions, ever since the year 2013, the calculation questions has become extremely difficult, it is so much so to the extent that one has to read the commentaries for each past year paper in order to attempt the questions. Exam questions are really misleading nowadays. Mr Mok focuses more on calculation questions, he does his own set of questions as well as a set of answers for the zone B papers for manangement accounting.

Valuation Securities Analysis (recommended best lecturer: Mok Tien Soon)

There is only one lecturer for VSA, Mr Mok is a dedicated teacher who is patient when answering questions.

Introduction to computer systems architecture and Programming (Only one lecturer: Koh Chung Haur)

Mr Koh is a very entertaining lecturer when he teaches this module. He keeps the class engaged with jokes, throughout the course of teaching. Half of the module focuses on the history of computers, the other half focuses on an introduction to Java programming. This is a relatively easy module to get an A for. with around 30% of the students each year at SIM scoring an A.
